Baling cardboard is a necessity in today’s world. In fact, almost regardless of industry, cardboard is almost certain to be one of the main waste products. With an eye towards reducing pollution, many developed nations have put strict legislation regarding cardboard waste – in many locales; it can no longer simply be incinerated.

In general terms, there are two different grades of cardboard: corrugated cardboard that is used for packing and shipping goods, and thinner “flat” cardboard used as packaging (sometimes this is called paperboard.) This paperboard is generally used in things like cereal boxes, cigarette packs, etc, and is usually not recycled.

But the corrugated type… that’s become an issue (and likely why you are looking at a cardboard baler). The environmental impact is enormous - for every ton of cardboard that is recycled, we can save 9 cubic yards of landfill space, not to mention the raw materials (104 tons of paper,which translates to 1,750 trees, thousands of gallons of water, and 426,000 kWh of energy.) That’s why so many governments have demanded recycling.
Cardboard takes up space. Hence the need to compact it into an easily handled, easily transportable form. Baling machines do exactly that. Let’s go over a few popular models:
Vertical balers are generally best for 0-2 tons of cardboard waste a day. This makes them perfect for a retail store or factory receiving daily deliveries, and generally will cost less than a single dumpster emptied once a week. It can bale a 300-1,200 lb. bale in approximately 20 minutes (markedly less time than breaking down / throwing away the boxes would take), and produce a 12:1 volume reduction.
Horizontal Balers are better suited for larger volumes (even 20+ tons a day, although you need not go that high). Horizontal balers come in both semi-automatic and fully automatic models, and can produce bales from440lbs to 1760lbs, with sizes up to 44'' x 44'' x 48'' – this is from a power pack of up to 30kw. The fully automatic models handle tying as well, and can produce 12 bales an hour. The semi-automatic models need the bales to be manually tied (meaning people), and are better suited for operations producing more than 2 tons of waste a day, but not so much that it’s a full-time job for several people to operate the machine.
