One of the most popular recycled substances is hollow plastic. PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles used for soft drinks, PP (Polypropylene) Bottles used for jars, PVC pipe used for construction, hoses, and plumbing, etc. These uses make hollow plastic one of the most used substances in the world. In fact, Petcore(the European trade association that fosters the collection and recycling of PET), reported that in Europe alone, 1.45 million tons of PET bottles were collected in 2010 –that’s more than 48.3% of all bottles. This is a massive recycling effort. PET, PP and PVC containers are collected and taken to recycling centers known as materials recovery facilities (MRF), where they are sorted and separated from other materials such as metal. Then they are compacted / crushed into space-saving bales for easy handling and transport.

Since hollow plastic is such a popular recycled material, there are industry norms / demands on how the material is stored, moved, and even compacted. To give an example, bags of bottles simply are not acceptable (they just take up too much space – it’s hollow plastic, after all.)So the solution is to compact the hollow plastic into bales.
